There is a speed limit in place for the entire road network in Luxembourg, even where there are no signs. This rule applies to all drivers, regardless of the type of vehicle.

SPEEDING OFFENCE

Only in the event of repeating a first serious violation

< 15 km/h over the speed limit in a built-up area

< 20 km/h over the speed limit outside a built-up area

> 135 km/h outside a built-up area

up to 25 km/h over the speed limit on the motorway

> 25 km/h over the speed limit on the motorway

> 195 km/h on the motorway

Fine of between €500 and €10,000 and imprisonment for between 8 days and 3 years, or only one of these penalties

Margins of tolerance:

  • When the speed measured is between 25 and 100 km/h, the margin of tolerance is 3 km/h.
  • When the speed measured is over 100 km/h, the margin of tolerance is 3%.

Speeding offence:

  1. The offender must have exceeded the mandatory speed limit by more than 50% or the speed recorded must have been at least 20 km/h over this limit.
  2. The offender must previously have committed one serious speeding violation and have paid a fixed penalty notice for speeding for a violation deemed serious, or previously have been convicted of a speeding violation deemed serious, or previously have been convicted of a speeding violation deemed an offence (speeding offence).
  3. The infraction (speeding offence) must be committed within 3 years of the day on which the fixed penalty notice incurred for a serious speeding violation was paid, either at the scene, by bank transfer or by VISA card, or of a final conviction for a serious speeding violation or a final conviction for a speeding offence.
