Lately, several private individuals have reported scam E-Mails to the Police, which are sent in the name of Government institutions.
Fraudsters send text messages pretending to be from a ministry, administration or public sector establishment. The aim of the scam is to obtain personal information (e.g. a credit card number with the relevant security code), or to persuade the victim to make a payment.
The messages claim, for example, that the recipient is entitled to a tax refund, owes money to the Luxembourg Inland revenue on pain of criminal prosecution, is entitled to a bonus, etc.
Remember that ministries, administrations or public sector establishments will never ask you to follow a link sent by text message and enter your personal information or make a payment. If you have any doubts, contact the government agency in question.
Any receivers of the e-mail are advised to delete it without following the instructions indicated in the message.
