1.5 meter distance when overtaking a cycle

The road does not belong to one category of vehicle. However, certain categories of road users, including cyclists, are particularly vulnerable.

This is why mutual respect is especially important where different road users come together.

In order to avoid accidents, the Luxembourg Highway Code provides a lateral distance of at least 1.5 meter that drivers of motor vehicles must respect when overtaking a bicycle.

This minimum distance applies both in urban and non-urban areas.

If the prescribed minimum distance of 1.5 meter cannot be maintained, the overtaking manoeuvre must be abandoned.

Please note that this is a minimum lateral distance. The higher the speed of the overtaking manoeuvre, the larger the distance should be.

However, the recommended lateral distance for cyclists when passing parked cars at the roadside is ideally the width of a car door.
